Some old PDAs, like M505, allow the user to switch off the backlight easily. However you cannot do the same thing in those new PDAs (Zire 71, TE, etc), basically because in these new devices, the screen content is hardly visible when the backlight is off. But anyway sometimes you might still want to turn of the backlight, such as in circumstances that the battery is running out while you still need to play with the PDA. Now, you can use the software Energy Dimmer to dim the backlight or even switch off it completely.
