(A) Laying a transect

Laying a transect

  1. An accessible area with apparent zonation of vegetation perpendicular to the sea line was found.
  2. A transect line was laid down through the vegetation perpendicular to the sea line.
  3. One of the end of the transect line was taken in contact with the plants at the back of the shore as the zero point.
  4. With the aid of a compass, the aspect of the shore was recorded along the line.

(B) Topography of the mud-flat

Topography

  1. A ranging pole at zero point was placed next to the transect line and another one at 5 m apart.
  2. A thread was tied to both ranging pole to make a line 0.5 m above the ground.
  3. The spirit level was used to check that the line is horizontal.
  4. The height of the cotton thread above the ground at 0 m and at 5 m were measured.
  5. The height difference was recorded.
  6. The slopes of other parts of the transect line were obtained in similar way.

(C) Belt-transect

Belt-transect

  1. A quadrat was placed next to the transect line.
  2. Number and location of plants and animals within the quadrat were recorded.
  3. Aquarium nets were used to catch fast moving animals
  4. About 8 cm of top soil within the quadrat was digged up with spade and trowel.
  5. Number of animals in the soil was noted.
  6. Steps 2,3,4 and 5 were repeated along the same side of the transect line at 10 m intervals.
